Canada Salary Search

We are pleased to introduce a new way for researching salary information in Canada- Canada Salary Search.

Our salary search tool is unlike most currently available salary research tools that rely on employer or employee surveys. Instead, we harness the power of our data warehouse of Canadian job listings that is used to power the Wowjobs's job search.

Using the Canada Salary Search is simple- just provide keyword and/or location information and you will see results in graphical and text format. You can also easily compare various keyword/location pairs to see the impact of relocation or added education/certification on salary.

Of course, like a few great things in life, the salary search tool is free to use and does not require any tedious registration or submission of your current salary information.

This is a beta release and there could be a few problems with it. Please try this feature out and submit your feedback to us.

Edmonton is a great city. In terms of career advancement and various quality of life metrics, it offers great possibilities to people at different stages of their careers. After all, we are based here for a reason!
Unless you are living in some other country and haven’t’ kept pace with what’s going on with the economy of Canada, you probably know that Alberta has been experiencing massive talent shortage for a while. Edmonton in particular has witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of jobs available as you can see by searching for jobs in Edmonton. However, the availability of quality talent hasn’t kept pace with this surge in jobs.
The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation is working on initiative to address this labor shortage by promoting the city of Edmonton in Central Canada to potential job seekers.
EEDC and Wowjobs.ca have partnered to create a custom implementation of Wowjobs.ca to offer potential job seekers perhaps the easiest way of searching through all jobs available in Edmonton and surrounding areas. The custom site can be accessed from Edmonton.com site as well as directly from here.

Support For Word Files

Support for Pdf Files

In an ideal world, employers would publish their RSS job feeds that would contain the detailed job descriptions that we could easily process and make them available for searching.
In the real world, however, jobs are posted in a variety of ways on the internet. Many employers post their jobs in PDF format as well. A few days ago, one of our users reported that one of the employers whose jobs are normally included in our results did not have any of the jobs in our job results. And sure enough, this employer-Whitby Mental Health center- had switched from normal web page format to PDF format for job postings.
Our aim at Wowjobs is to make Wowjobs the only place where you need to go for job search in Canada. With that goal in mind, we are pleased to announce the inclusion of jobs posted in PDF format from hundreds of employers across Canada. We'll be very quickly adding more sites that have jobs posted in PDF format. Some of the biggest employers whose jobs we have indexed include Nunavut Government, BC Provincial Health Authority and of course, the Whitby Mental Health Center. This is a new feature so there could be a few glitches. Please keep all the wonderful suggestions coming in.

Improving Results Quality

We've been working hard over the last several months to offer you the best job search experience possible in Canada. We've been focusing on three important things:

-Quantity of Jobs

-Search Relevance/Experience

-Quality of Jobs

While we continue to work on quantity of jobs as well as search relevance, I'd like to highlight some of the changes we have made related to improving the quality of jobs. As you know, to offer you the maximum number of jobs, we try to incorporate results from as many genuine job sources in Canada as possible. However, while we try to do our best to establish the genuineness of these sources, on some occasions, perhaps due to their own business reasons, some of these sources publish less than desirable job postings.

The most recent example of this came to our attention and it was almost bizarre. Job site A (which will go unnamed here) got its jobs from Job Site B(which will also remain anonymous) and posted on its own site. So far, it's understandable. However, job site B got its jobs from job site C(which will be named-Canadian Job bank). So for a job seeker on wowjobs, the following would transpire:

Job seeker searches for keyword/location combo and sees results from job site A. She clicks on the link on job site A and she's taken to job site B. She doesn't find the information there either and clicks on link to job site C. On clicking the link to job site C, instead of finding job details, she finds a message that the job posting has expired. If you are a patient person, you might live through all this, but I'd definitely be a tad angry.

Well, our only business model at this time is to make our users happy and we took this quite seriously and got rid of the offending job boards from our results. And to make sure that we did not lose out on any of the original jobs (howsoever scarce) posted on either of these boards, we directly indexed the job sites of the companies that post on these boards.

(Almost)The End of Duplicate Posts

One of the most common requests for changes/enhancements to wowjobs was for a duplicate post filter. Duplicate postings could be a frustrating 'feature' and we had been looking at a way to address this issue since our beta launch. I'm happy to let you know that the first cut of our duplicate postings filter is now live and available for your use.

Duplicate posts occur because an employer or recruiter posts the same job on different job sites (for example, on monster, workopolis, bcjobs or craigslist). Or on the same site within different job categories (e.g. a Retail Clerk job posted in categories of Retail, Administrative and Others). While this is good from the perspective of the employer and the job board, it could be a time waster from the perspective of job seekers. Our aim at wowjobs is to make your Canadian job search experience simple and effective. And wherever we can help you save time and make your job search process easier, we'll throw in our time and energy.

With the first cut of the filter, we think we have captured a bulk of duplicate posts, but there still might be a few tricky ones that slip through our filters. If you find any of these, do let us know. We are working to fine tune our duplicate filters and hopefully in the coming months we'll have a very vast majority of duplicates captured.

If you haven't already noticed, do so now! We've added a personalization feature to Wowjobs to make your Wowjobs experience better. You can now create a free MyWowjobs account and use it to do a number of things like saving your jobs, saving your searches and managing alerts.
A number of our users had asked for these things, so here they are!
We plan to offer the Canadian job seekers some other interesting new features in the near future, so please keep on coming! And do keep on passing those suggestions and complaints!

Search By Title...In an obvious way

In the last few days many of wowjobs users asked for a search by Title. Even though there was an indirect way of doing search by Title, it was frequently missed by the users. We now have a more direct way of doing search by title and it will hopefully make searching easier (especially for all you searching for "Human Resources"!).
We have included a standard filter for searching by Title and it appears as an option in every search. This is also available in Advanced Search. If you have been coming in for your job searches frequently, you might have noticed other tweaks as well.
Please keep the suggestions coming in...they are very much needed and appreciated.

Updates on last two weeks or so...

Wow! A lot has happened in the last two and a half weeks or so since we went live with the Beta. The response has been great and we have had over 30,000 visitors since the launch of the beta.
We got scores of suggestions, ideas for improvement, requests for partnerships, questions whether we were going public(!) and of course reports of problems. Thanks a bunch to you all for the great feedback and comments provided.
The highlight of our launch was the coverage provided by Edmonton Journal on 29th June.
This was followed by coverage in Calgary Herald, Vancouver Province and Saskatoon Star Phoenix on the 30th of June.
And not surprisingly we had huge gushes of traffic flowing our way that caused occasional performance issues. We are adding more servers and that will hopefully take care of performance issues.
Do keep on checking this blog as I'll be posting more frequently and addressing some of the suggestions/concerns and problems reported by you.

Beta formally launched

Okay, we have formally launched the beta of our job site. Here's the press release:
Edmonton, AB June 12, 2006-
Wowjobs (http://www.wowjobs.ca) today released the beta version of its Job Search engine.
Wowjobs.ca is Canada's largest job search engine having more than 100,000 jobs available for searching. That makes wowjobs.ca the largest job search engine in the Canadian market, having more jobs than any other job search engine or job site.
According to Anuvinder Singh, founder of wowjobs.ca,
"We don't want to eliminate the traditional job sites that the employers and candidates have grown so comfortable with. Our aim is to empower the Canadian job seeker by giving them the tools to perform an efficient and effective job search in the simplest possible way. With a single click, job seekers from across Canada can access almost all jobs pertinent to their search criteria. The days of searching multiple job sites for the same search criteria are clearly over."
The search experience on wowjobs.ca is very much similar to that of performing search on any major search engine.
The site provides ability to search by keywords, location (province, city or postal code). The site provides several tools to job seekers such as Email Alerts, RSS Feeds and Advanced Search. Users can also browse jobs by Location-city and province.
More job sites will be indexed and additional functionality will be added through out the beta phase, which is expected to last several months.

We have over 112,000 active jobs from over 100 job sites in Canada.
